Boswellia serrata is a gum tree containing 4 boswellic acids. AKBA (Acetyl- 11-keto b-Boswellic Acid) is the most potent boswellic acid (BA) having anti-inflammatory properties.
AKBAmax™ is 5 times more potent than conventional Boswellia serrata extracts and contains a minimum of 40% total Boswellic Acids (by HPLC method), from which a minimum of 10% of AKBA.

The mechanism is based on the arachidonic acid cascade. Arachidonic acid can form 2 types of pro-inflammatory substances called prostaglandins and leucotriens. This reaction is promoted by 2 enzymes respectively, cyclo-oxygenase (COX) and lipo-oxygenase, resulting in inflammation, pain and joint destruction. Most of the anti-arthritic drugs are only COX2 inhibitors. AKBA inhibits 5-lipo-oxygenase pathway.
