Alpha-lipoic acid, often referred to as the metabolic antioxidant, has two functions in the human body:

1. Acts as a coenzyme in the Krebs cycle, specifically in the decarboxylation of pyruvate and other alpha keto acids, generating energy from food and oxygen in the mitochondria.
   
   
2. Antioxidant activity, preventing healthy cells from getting damaged by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals.
